Please stop assuming!

The Daily Mail has turned moaning about everything and nothing into an art and made it their Trade Mark!

The Prime Minster, yesterday in his ‘New Economic Dynamism’ speech to the CBI, said: “As we control our borders and bring immigration to a manageable level, we will not impede you from attracting the best talent from around the world.” To me that sounds like the planed immigration cap should not ‘impede’ businesses from recruiting the skilled foreign workers they need, but it does not necessarily mean, as hinted by the Mail, that the Coalition is watering down their stance on immigration!

However, it does offer assurances to businesses that this government, is on their side. Plus no body YET knows what the finial details of the cap are, as they will be announced around Christmas time!

So to assume otherwise is premature, and we all know what ASSUME means!

The whole point of the immigration cap is to impede immigrants. If you didn’t impede immigrants, net migration wouldn’t fall.

If you impede immigrants, you impede the recruitment of immigrants.

And if you impede recruitment, you impede business.

That’s why thousands of companies have been up in arms to the Migration Advisory Committee over the implications of this damaging cap.

The Tories decided that public concern over immigration trumped the needs of businesses to trade without unnecessary restrictions and bureaucracy. You may well have won a few seats off the back of this public concern.

But now you find yourself in the uncomfortable position that what the public thinks it wants is not compatible with what the country actually needs.

Perhaps next time the mainstream political parties could refrain from pandering to the wrongly-founded concerns of the public and instead make the (strong) case for immigration to this country to be less restricted.
