It seems Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney have hit the jackpot picking Paul Ryan as his running mate. And although, in some circles, Ryan’s selection was anticipated, it still came as a surprise. It was a pleasant surprises for those on the right, specially the Tea Party Movement supporters, but unpleasant for the Democrats.

Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Congressman is a daring choice in more ways than one. He is a policy man, an entitlement reformer, young (only 42 year old) and very bold. His selection has definitely invigorated the US presidential race and as surprises go, his pick could be the last big surprise until the outcome of the election itself. Of course in-between now and then, there will be a few gaffs plus the usual memorable moments here and there. But Obama is unlikely to drop Joe Biden form his ticket just as the Democrats are unlikely to drop him from theirs.

A great sign of things to come is how Republican supporters showed their approval of his pick, by stuffing the Romney – Ryan campaign chest. In less than four hours after the announcement, campaign donations surpassed the one million dollar mark!

Democrats were fast in attacking Ryan as being the entitlement reformer who will trim welfare and pension entitlements. But if their best criticism is he wants to reduce public spending at a time where US spending under President Obama has spiraled out of control; they might as well endorse him.

Despite that, if Paul Ryan energies Middle American, same as Palin did when she was first picked in 2008 and manages to sustain it. The Romney – Ryan ticket will win in November. Because, this time, Obama is the incumbent with the bad economic record, this time there will be no landmark visits to Berlin and no mesmerizing speeches in Cairo. This time, there will be none of that ‘Hopey Changey’ business to fall back on!
