Lefties just want to run everybody’s life, don’t they?

Universal Credit

Of course the left thinks it can manage peoples’ lives better, just look at what Labour did and wants to do given the chance to govern again.

The new single payment benefit system, the Universal Credit, is a once monthly payment designed to make applying and calming for social aid easy and simple. It is applied for online and consists of up to six benefits – Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits and Housing Benefit. Before, all benefits were claimed separately, but now are applied for together and paid directly to claimants own bank accounts.

The idea aims to simplify the welfare system. Help claimants and their families to become more independent and have more control of their own money. It is also designed to help those out of work or working part-time to have their benefits withdrawn gradually when they find employment or increase their working hours.

So, we should be celebrating. A reform that trusts people knowing what works for them and believes they can make the best decisions for their own situation. What not to like?

Unfortunately, some, particularly landlords who used to receive their rent directly from the state, fear with benefits going to tenants, some might fall into rent arrears. And some recipients are concerned that having all that money might tempt them to use it for other things!

Both are possible, but how is either the state’s problems?

The notion that government should reconsider or all together withdraw a cost effective and fair system because some people are not responsible enough to manage their finical affairs is laughable. How not being a responsible adult government’s problem? And when did we become a society of invalids unable to manage our own affairs? What happened to basic common sense?

Everybody who rents privately or socially knows how much their rent costs and also knows if they don’t pay they risk losing the roof over their head. Everybody who receives aid from the state knows they are responsible to properly spend it or face the consequences.

Granted there are those who will misuse their benefits and as a result get themselves and their families in trouble. But as sad as that is, it is not the government’s responsibility nor should it be.

I can understand if there was a call for some basic money management training programmes available to those who might need them online or via workshops. But to squarely put the blame on the state is wrong, lazy and unrealistic. I see no grounds for the left using Universal Credit as a possible cause for the potential demise of some irresponsible folks just as I see no logic behind their thinking.
