Vested interests broken – people empowered!

Only when vested interest is broken will the people become empowered; that was the core of David Cameron’s speech in Putney, south-west London this morning.

As voters the people of Britain have a choice to make, “Five years of Gordon Brown, or Change with the Conservatives and new energy, to get Britain moving”.

But we all know that change doesn’t just happen and change is never easy. It is hard because there will always be people who want to preserve the status quo even when it isn’t working in everyone’s interest.

Why? Because there will always be those who have vested interest in the way things are now. We all know that, and we all remember times when we had to wrestle with change. But we also know if it wasn’t for change much of what we enjoy today will not be.

He gave historical examples where people stood and fought for change, “like standing up for a despotic King that our rights first came enshrined in Magna Carta – or when Parliament stood up to planters, merchants and ship owners that the slave trade was abolished. Cameron gave instances were Conservatives like Peel, who took on landowners, repealed the Corn Laws and brought cheap food for everyone, and Disraeli, who took on some of the richest in the land, introduced factory reforms and protected people from exploitation. More recently Margret Thatcher’s government was defined by taking the side of the people against the powerful, the vested interest….”

Throughout history it was only when vested interest was broken that people were empowered.

Today this country needs and yearns for change – we need a bold, transparent, and fresh leadership that is ready to face the challenges at hand, a leadership that is willing to stand up to the test ahead, a leadership that will empower people and break vested interests.

This leadership can only come about by change. It is Time For Change.
