A Band-Aid is not a cure!

When the journalist, Johann Hari twitted {one of my 12yr old nephews got beaten up on the bus by a 16 year old. I am murderous with rage} Twitter and the Blogosphere let up!

First, I am sorry for his nephew – it is a dreadful ordeal to experience. I cannot begin to imagine the distress the young lad and his family must be going through – and I hope that he is OK!

The phenomena of boys beating, stabbing and even shooting each other MUST be one of the first issues addressed by this administration. Unlike the previous administration, there should be no more tiptoeing, light or half measure sentencing for those found guilty.

Punishment should fit the crime and time must mean time!

Via my community work – as a Trustee – I see first hand how some youngsters (young men in particular) are failed by the system and their families who at a very young age start with fighting and lashing out, and gradually graduate to hardened criminals by adulthood. These kids use the system like a revolving door holiday camp never once completing a sentence and always breaking the terms of their license.

On top of that, our correctional services need to become more than a babysitting facility for difficult kids. Parents also need to be held accountable and society needs to be unafraid to throw the book at those who deserve it. Because our kids, the future of our country deserve better than a band-aid solution – they deserve real care.
