Forced Marriages, aren’t they a thing of the past!?

It seems not. The sad news that a British couple, were shot dead in Pakistan, in an apparent “honour” killing as they reneged in a pre-agreement to let their two daughters marry their nephews, is horrifying. The couple could not escape death even after offering the two grooms and their family £18,000 by way of apology and compensation.
First of all, there is no honour in what happened – it is barbaric, UN – Islamic [just in-case the Muslim bashing brigade wants to jump in], this sub-Indian tradition need to be criminalized and become a punishable crime in the UK – the arm of the law, in this case, should extend to Britons who commit it even outside the UK. Allowing it to carry on under the banner of tolerance and multiculturalism, is even a bigger a crime because we ought to know better!
Some are suggesting that we need to work with the Pakistani and other authorities to come to a solution – that will just be a waste of time and resources. The only thing the UK needs to do and should do is protect its citizen – but if those citizens choose to break the law [assuming forced marriage will become illegal] then they can pay the price under the law – or live their lives as fugitives.
