In loving Memory of the 9/11 victims

Posted 11 Sep 2010 by Walaa Idris

Escorted by a policeman to my front door, after spending 3 hours as a hostage by an electrician who demanded payment for non work, the first thing I did was turn on the TV. At that time we all thought a plane crashed on the first Tower and were waiting for more details….

….. minutes later the second plan hit the second Tower!

It was and still is the scariest thing I’ve ever watch unfold in front of my eyes …sitting there, frozen and numb with shock and disbelief. A number of feelings and emotions went through me, and although watching it as it happened I could not believe that it did happen!!

Something changed that day, the whole world changed and I knew, it had changed for ever!

But today, nine years from that dreadful day, although it is about what happened in 9/11, and even though the pain for some might never go away or subside, we owe it to those who lost their lives on that day, to peacefully honour their memory.

Let today be a day of Remembrance and Reflection, not a day for politics and political point scoring nor is it for rallies, for or against the New York City Islamic Centre – it is and should only be about the victims and their families.

May they rest in peace and may their loved ones find the strength to live in peace!

It’s a “JFK moment”. Those who were around at the time remember what we were doing when we heard this terrible news. I had just got into work, I was on late shift that week and we had TV monitors running. A lot of the workforce were gathered round and we saw the first tower aflame. One of the lads said “There has been a dreadful accident, a plane has crashed into one of the WTC towers”. A few minutes later live on screen the second plane did likewise to the other tower and we realised that this was no accident but a deliberate act of cowardly terrorism.

What made matters worse was that we had some Americans over at the time and one can only imagine the state they were in when they watched this.

May God grant eternal rest to all the innocent people who died that day nine years ago and comfort their relatives and friends in their grief.

It is indeed, my parents always talk about where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy was assassinated.

Now, sadly I have mine!
