Winners & Losers ~ July 27, 2010

Yesterday 44 conservative MPs , despite the government’s efforts, signed Bernard Jenkin’s Early Day Motion calling for the vote on AV to be decoupled from next year’s Scottish, Welsh and local elections. They are winners for championing democracy.

The sentences given to the two teens [who punched to death Ekram Haque, the 67 years old grandfather, while capturing the whole thing on video – a vile act known as “Happy Slapping”] is a failure of our society and our judiciary. Although prison in its current format might not be the solution, the two perpetrators deserved a longer and harsher sentence than the combined 8 years [ which they will probably only serve half ] between them. Furthermore, there is nothing ‘Happy’ about what they did a change of name is in order.

And we are back on the same page. I wonder how long Cameron will keep the smile if he keeps on getting his knuckles rapped by the back benchers. As a charter member of the Dump Dave brigade I have to admit that he is the reason I will not rejoin the part. I understand that to rule we need to be in the centre and force the labour party to the left, the problem is that Blair/Brown/Campbell/Mandy managed to move the centre to the left of centre and I see no will in Cameron to pull it back to the right.

The sentencing is a symptom of the change, and the woolly liberals use of phrases such as Happy Slappy is a vain attempt to paint these people as recoverable. There has to be a deterrent, you and I will probable never agree on Capital Punishment so what is the solution.

Very happy to hear that, are we on the same page with Cameron, the Unifier?
