Samantha Cameron gets my Vote

Samantha and David Cameron 2

The news that Samantha Cameron on an interview with Sir Trevor McDonald has indicated that she is preparing to hit the campaign trail for two days a week was neither a shock nor a surprise. As a loving and supportive partner it would have come as a shock if she has indicated otherwise.

The surprise was the feeling by some, that this is a “Bad idea …” or “…just because Gordon Brown’s wife is supporting him …” or “I am against politicians bringing their home life…” and the general under tone that wives are just a pretty thing that should be seen and not heard!!!

Today a successful relationship between two is mostly founded on a partnership more than on being a spouse and a kinship. Wives, husbands and partners share much more than the traditional habitat, surname and bank account of yesteryears, it therefore, makes perfect sense for a politician’s partner to be visible on the campaign trail beside their other half. Not only does it send a positive message to the voting public, it is uplifting to the candidate, their team and the overall morale of the campaign. In addition it gives the voting public a great inside to the candidate/partner – “if Sarah Brown can love Gordon Brown then ……” or “if Tony Blair can love her then Cherie Blair ….” these are some of the comments and remarks we hear about leaders’ and their partners.

Unlike past elections, this election is about everything from policies, personalities, characters to attitudes and perceptions.

Samantha Cameron is an assist HERE to the Conservatives and they will be mad to keep her locked away from their most crucial and vital fight, bedsides let’s not forget that it was Samantha who encouraged David to stand for the leadership and it is Sam who Dave bounces a lot of his ideas and test his speeches on.

There is no doubt that Sam Cam is a great asset to us – but on principle I am not entirely sure that wives (unless they are “political animals” in their own right!!) should be compelled to go on the campaign trail alongside their husbands.
A few years ago at Party Conference there was a “three line whip” put out that wives had to be there and I certainly saw at least one who looked as though she would far rather be at home tending her garden!
