Possible early election...

Brown and Cameron

The big political talk these past couple of weeks was the polls and the sudden dip and the narrowing gap between the Conservatives and Labour. So much so that there is a feeling in some circles that Mr Brown might call the election earlier than May 2010.
I guess he might if he wants to capitalise on his best poll ratings since ‘The Election That Never Was’ back in 07. Given that we all know why he bottled that election (low poll ratings); with better ratings it makes perfect sense to call an early election and capitalise on them. This narrowing in the polls also gives Mr Brown a false confidence and belief that he is doing the right thing. Despite what most observers and analysts are saying he will want to feel that his recovery plans are on track and working. Particularly as the high street and unemployment figures are showing some (albeit very slim) levelling signs, all this Labour will ‘mentally’ translate into a possible fourth victory.

But unfortunately for Labour and Mr Brown the expenses’ scandal has increased the Lib Dems confidence and gave rise to new contenders (all the small fringe parties) who will all capitalise from the scandal at Labour’s expense, and that will inevitably eat up Labour’s nice majority. As exciting as all of this is of course there is the possibility of a hung Parliament; if the polls are a correct and real indicator then the Tories will win but only with a modest majority, if that happens it might be a problem but not the disaster some are predicting.

In spite of this it is not as dim a prospect for the Conservatives as Labour might hope. While Labour is tired, disillusioned, disunited and every couple of weeks newly sharpened daggers surface after their leader and his leadership, the Tories are fresh, young united and ready to serve. Plus, the Tories are far more in tune with the British street and the public mood than Labour is. Conservative policies offer realistic, logical and long term solutions to the county’s deep problems both socially and economically. And that is what most normal everyday folks want, a solution to their daily trials and tribulations. They don’t want someone who pulls the wool over their eyes and deliver empty unrealistic promises. They want and need someone who cares about them their needs and well being, they definitely don’t want someone who feels entitled to govern them because he made some deal a few years back and now is here to collect at any cost. Polls might be narrow for now but I doubt they will give Labour a fourth term.
