Why Reality TV?

Until recently the hottest shows were Friends, Frasier, and the daily Soaps in the evening, Oprah, This Morning and Richard & Judy on daytime TV. But more and more reality Shows like Maury and Big Brother are taking centre stage with millions of viewers daily. Unlike the X Factor and Britain Got Talent, [which are talent based] these shows have a tasteless voyeurism about them that drives its pleasure from the humiliation of the participants.

I understand personal freedom and choice but there must be a sense of responsibility from the makers of these shows towards those who are vulnerable to protect them self. Nonetheless, it raises the question; do people like to watch others in reality shows because it makes them feel better about themselves!?
