What a revelation the BBC’s ‘Five Days that Changed Britain’ tuned to be.

Although I lived those five days and was there watching and listening to the media reporting and political pundits commenting – seeing a glimpse of what happened behind the scenes of that historical and exciting time it made the picture complete.

It is very impressive how the Tories are prepared for every eventuality, which in itself is comforting to know; it means, in government they can be trusted to handle things with a clear head and an open mind but most of all they will always put county before party. The program also demonstrated how united, disciplined and orderly they are as a party.

While the Tories came fully prepared to meetings [having a clear idea what they want and what they can give-up], Labour walked into the meetings unaware of what else they wanted besides staying in power. They came in with the attitude “we are the government, how we can help you” they had no concession for what to give back in return and the concept of power sharing was lost on them. Even when the LibDems told them what was on the table from the Tories, Labour was unable to match it, let alone trump it. They were truly bankrupt as a party and group of negotiators. Sadly ‘for them’ they were too confidant that all they needed to do is invite the Liberals to join them in office, and they will have a deal!

Some personalities such as Cameron, Hague, the Tory negotiations team and David Laws came out of these talks as true selfless heroes. To some extend Nick Clegg too, he did what was needed of him – to move our country forward and to safe it form any further economic mismanagement – but he did not come across totally selfless.

Sir Ming Campbell, Lord Ashdown and Vince Cable, clearly do not like the Tories and would rather never see power in their lifetimes than work with a Conservative. And that clouded their judgment. In their quest to achieve that they almost derailed talks with the Tories – but the LibDem talk’s team [Huhne, Laws & Alexander] was disciplined and focused to avert that disaster. However, Campbell, Ashdown and Cable are troopers for giving the Coalition their blessing, albeit it’s of the “lets wait and see” variety.

Unfortunately for Ed Balls, he came out the worst of all in this program, not only did he came across too full of himself he seemed to lack any patriotic feelings and his only aim was to please his master – he snaked, twisted and ducked for five days to keep Brown in Number Ten.

The shocking surprise is Mandelson, he came into this program the evil doer that will stop at nothing to get what he wants and came out as the frank and sensible country loving man that Labour and Brown should have listened to.
