The case pro, "Life for Life"!

Posted 3 Nov 2010 by Walaa Idris

Forget prisoners having the vote and never mind talking about their human rights, this man should have been incarcerated for life; he took a life and now is representing human rights!?

What a JOKE!

Hat tip for Andrew Neil, and although someone like this axe murderer should never be allowed out of prison let alone given a platform from which to spew his bile, however, I hope today, having him on our screens has made the case pro “Life For Life” stronger!

Walaa I have not seen the interview but I think you and no doubt the tabloids and various political backwoods men are conflating two things. The case of whether either the judicial system or govt ministers should set an imprisonment tariff and that of having as part of a democratic society the right to say who governs the country.

On the 1st, I am happy to leave it to the judges as we have seen govt ministers of all partys pander to the atavisitic wishes of the crowd…its an easy populist measure and its a safe law and order issue not requiring much political thought. judges on the other hand do not have to worry about being popular and they are less subject to what at times can be cheap emotionalism.

On my 2nd point; no one is saying that having the right to vote is going to see Murderers as MPs or Rapists as councillars. From what I can gather the ECHR has said that prisoners have the right to express their democratic choice while in prison. this does not mean they get out early nor will they get special privilidges. furthermore i would argue that it (note may) actually encourage them to realsie that they have a chance to become a stakeholder in a society that they had forseaken through their actions and surely thats a good thing. All very well saying life for a life until the system fucks up and someone gets wrongly convicted(as it will-look to the USA if you dont beleive me)..
