Why so angry!?

Posted 10 Jan 2011 by Walaa Idris

What’s happening to the relationship between politicians and the public, why and how did it become so dysfunctional and venomous but most of all who’s responsible for it getting thus far?

This recent wave of pure rage and anger at the political class the world over did not just come out of nowhere or as a result of the Iraq War, the expenses’ scandal, the coalition agreement or the election of a leftish US president. Throughout history countries waged war at one another, the wrong man or woman was elected, politician had indiscretion at the publics’ expense, but never before had there been a period full of thundering fury at politicians like now!

This overflowing annoyance that manifested itself in the stabbing of Stephen Timms, Labour MP for East Ham, during his weekly surgery, the assassination of Salman Tasser, the governor of the Punjab province in Pakistan, and the latest tragic shooting in Tuscon Arizona that claimed innocent lives and put congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords at death’s door, is unreal. They are all elected representatives of the people, voted in office to do a job and were attacked while performing their duties.

It’s disturbing and terrifying, that rage and anger and dare I say blind hatred can strip humans of all human sentiments and decency to the point of wanting to killing – granted some who commented these crimes are unstable – but still why!?

Why on the whole we are so angry with our politicians plus who’s to blame for that anger?

The 24/7 News – because filling 24/7 with new stuff means casting the net wider and digging deeper to stay current and exciting – the public, for becoming more clued in and better informed, or the politicians themselves. But we all know that not all politicians are in it for themselves, and not all news reports or reporters are sensationalists hounds and most people can see the woods from the trees and know what’s what.

But still, it does not answer the why – why are we so angry at our politicians – who and what’s to blame! I have no idea maybe someone can help.

Over to you!

Simple answer: Violence begets violence.

A start of a solution would be to try to restore integrity in public affairs. One example would be to consider some of the motives of others and try to understand them rather than assign absurd and ill-inform labels to people.

All the best….

You are right to raise this, Walaa, and I too fear the wave of anger that has arisen from the public world-wide. Yes, part of the reason is the “bad apples in the barrel” who have succumbed to corruption,as opposed to the many good people who go into public life from the best of motives, but this is not the whole cause. I believe the main problem is that so many people feel themseves to be powerless and their frustration boils over into rage. David Icke and other conspiracy theorists feed on that powerlessness and exploit the unfortunate people who lap up the rubbish they write. I do not know what the answer is, but I fear the rage is boiling over
