The Zimmerman Martin trail left me sad but also confused

It left me sad because the loss of a young life regardless of its circumstances is always painfully poignant. And in this case, the verdict of the trial caused more sadness and lurched people back to darker times.

To a time before electing and re- elected the first black family to the White House. To before pronouncing to the world, America has healed, moved forward and put behind her the ugly past – to the days where race troubles were a major issue and a reason for aggression.

In 2013’s America, the skin colour of victims, the accused and jurors should not have any bearing on justice and the judicial outcome of a case. Yet judging by recent events, to many, race still remains a major issue.

That confused me. It also made me question, if Trayvon Martin was white, would George Zimmerman’s acquittal have had the same reaction?

What many seem to have conveniently forgotten, is although the prosecution’s case was weak and the defences’ was strong, race and race relations were not on trial. So why make the trial’s outcome about them?
