Walaa's Weekly Wrap-Up ~ August 31, 2013

What happened on Thursday was not a Cameron defeat or a Miliband victory. It was the public mood translated, bravely might I add, by their representatives in voting against military intervention in an already bloody and ugly war, especially as we don’t know or have all the facts.

It was Britain saying we are not a bullying nation. We are not a listen to us or we’ll kill you outfit. What we are is a peace loving, conflict resolving and empowering nation. We trust people to know what’s best for them and help them achieve it. And until we know 100% wrong was done, we are not going in guns blazing on the say so of the US and their trigger happy leaders.

The Syria vote was a proud moment in our history, and Cameron’s graciousness in losing it vote showed his mettle.

Red lines crossed in Syria so the west has carte blanche to bomb them, but a coup in Egypt is the well of the people and we continue to support the aggressor!

This double standard diplomacy is the reason we have home grown terrorists and disaffected Muslim who feel picked on and discriminated against. We can’t have one rule for those we like and another for those we don’t agree with. Red lines were crossed in Egypt too.

We need to be careful. Be consistent in our dealings and treatment to all nations.

Two Conservatives MPs disappointed me during the debate. Nadhim Zahawi for saying Parliament has “let down the innocent people of Syria…”! Who did he think our bombs were going to kill?

My second disappointment came from the seasoned Sir Malcolm Rifkind, when he said: “we know the only nation in the region with chemical weapons is Syria.” Really!? What about Israel and Iran?

Two shameful moments for two otherwise brilliant and capable parliamentarians
