The ultimate lock in

Tan Hill

The news that thirty partygoers were still celebrating New Year’s Eve at England’s highest pub yesterday because they were stranded for three days by seven – foot snow made me very, very jealous. Pubs, I enjoy; snow – I just adore; and a party; give me one anytime, but for three consecutive days that is priceless!

Thirty Leeds University students and teacher were cut of the world at the pub; they were later joined by 17 people rescued from the nearby motorway which was closed as heavy snowfall hit the whole Pennine Chain. Tan Hill is 1,732ft above sea level at the head of Arkengarthdale on the Yorkshire-Durham boarder, a very beautiful part of the country. Imagine all the unconstrained fun things you can do that weren’t previously planed. Games, movies, chats, making the largest ever snowman, cooking and eating together not to mention relaxing and being commitment free; and not having to worry about schedules or meetings guilt free.

OK, maybe it sounds a little irresponsible and juvenile, but if you had no say in the matter (as the ultimate lock in party did) won’t it be the greatest excuse to just let your hair down, go with the flow and enjoy yourself? And whatever you could not do or not get to ‘this time’ you can honestly blame it on the weather!
