They have two must read articles, the first by Paul Goodman about the Liberals Democrats possible splitting and being absorbed by the Conservatives and Labour. Judging by the Liberal’s history Goodman’s argument makes perfect sense.
Except from what we’ve seen and learned of Nick Clegg he is a conviction politician with a vision of a stand alone LibDem party. Many see the Liberals as being used by the Tories to prop them up in government, but on the flip side the LibDems are also benefiting (it might not look or feel like it now) from being a practicable party and showing that they can and know how to govern centrally. That kind of vision and ambition can not be easily extinguished. I can see the left of the party breaking and even joining Labour but the Nick Clegg branch – Danny Alexander, Jeremy Browne, David Laws and the right leaning bunch – will continue flying the LibDem flag.
Actually, if anybody should be worried it should be the Tories, because that faction of the liberals appeals to a lot of the middle class middle of the road voters those who are unhappy with either Labour or the conservatives – yes that was the general feeling before the last General Election and did not quite materialise, but then some will argue that it did.
The second by Jonathan Isaby asking if CCHQ is taking the Oldham East by election seriously, well they must, because it was announced a few days ago David Cameron will be campaigning for Kashif Ali, and as of this morning candidates have been emailed with details of the campaign manger, Andy Stephenson MP and the three campaign coordinators, and all the relevant details of phone bank extra – but he is right in that they were asked to help as oppose to being told to help, plus this time there is no notes or emails to signed by “the hall monitor” either. That could simply be because “technically” none are candidates until after May.
However, it is a great opportunity, as he puts it to show initiative – as I am positive someone will be watching and reporting back!
