Sally Bercow is a media savvy genius!

Although I don’t know Mrs Bercow personally – we communicated a couple of time on Twitter – I like her, she seems fun and her attacks on the Conservative party seem more satire. They are designed to mainly get her noticed and to windup Tory followers. Her personal attacks on David Cameron were for maximum effect and have all but stopped.

However, what I still don’t understand is why some still think Mrs. Speaker is an airhead who talks and acts before she thinks?

First was the sleeping around and drinking loads interview, then came her photo-shoot wearing only a bed sheet and talking about amazing sex under Big Ben to the Evening Standard. That was followed by her Big Brother moment about how she got the Speaker to agree to her going into the house after a dirty weekend. And finally her interview with Iain Dale for Total Politics magazine, when he asked her what was her favorite gadget she answered a vibrator. Even when Iain (her friend) gave her an out – by asking if that’s on or off the record – she wanted it on the record!

Many who know her personally think she doesn’t think before she speaks – I’m inclined to think the exact opposite – Sally knows sex sells and she ain’t stupid

Sally Bercow knows what she wants and how to get it

Bercow CBB 2011

Going by the reactions over her entering the Celebrity Big Brother house, it seems, that trait doesn’t sit well with everyone!

As a mother I applaud women who can mange anything besides cooking and planning play dates with raising a young family. In Sally’s case she is managing it with raising £100,000 for her charity, making a name for herself while enjoying a little show biz glamour – surely that can’t be a bad thing!!

Both Bercows enjoy attention and both find ways of getting it. As for damaging the office of the Speaker – John Bercow does not need Sally’s help – he is doing a great job on his own thrashing the post. First, by ditching the Speaker’s attire – a great tradition and hundreds of years of history, not to mention a big tourist attraction – plus he never misses a chance to pick a fight with MPs in Chambers on cameras. To stir up controversy, he mostly picks them with Tory MPs – the party that put him in Parliament – where at times, these bouts are unnecessary and can come across as deliberate and calculated.

Mrs. Bercow on the other hand is a clever woman, who, as Iain Dale put’s it, lacks a pause button – that internal stop/start mechanism that tell most of us when to shut up and stops us from doing and saying certain things. Sally also seems to have a lot of drive and determination to be her own person, in addition to the love and understanding of a husband who despite disagreeing with some of what she does allows her the freedom to be who she wants to be. Surely that can’t all be a bad, can it!?

Most of those, in the public and the media who dislike her, mainly do because she is mouthy and hates with a passion all things traditional and Tory (although I think most her Tory bashing is satire, tongue in cheek and part of the attention game she plays so well).

Either way the woman is gutsy, fun to watch and knows what she wants but mostly knows how to get it – now be honest, how many would like a little of that?

Sally Bercow is like Marmite

Posted 4 Feb 2011 by Walaa Idris

You either love her or hate her. Her party, Labour, loves her and will probably give her a very safe seat to fight in the next election. Not because she is a political phenomenon, an economic genius or a selfless community activist, but because she gets up the Tories nose every time she opens her mouth – which she does daily many times a day and because she is a celebrity.

On the other hand the Conservatives, the party who she once belonged to, doesn’t like her that much. Also, most of its members dislike her husband because of her, and as irritating as he on his own, Sally’s tweets, which are more pantomime and deliberately posted to inflame don’t help much.

However, the media and some pundits think Mrs Bercow’s political teasing and her insatiable appetite for media attention will end John Bercow’s Speakership, I used to think the same but have to disagree. Now I believe John Bercow is his own worst enemy, he too revels at rubbing, the wrong way, members of the party that put him in the house and very rarely passes an opportunity to inflame them. But if anything at all Sally Bercow is actually helping him increase his popularity which could end up saving his Speakership!

One of Mr Speaker’s earliest critics and the first MP to openly call for John Bercow to step down is Conservative MP Nadine Dorries. Nadine is also the first member to have a public altercation with the Speaker in the corridors of Westminster, long before his incident in the Chambers with the Chief Whip. She is also amongst the first to publicly criticise his new dress down style and point out its damage to the role and tourism. Not to mention she is amongst the very first to show distaste to Mrs Bercow’s continuous and relentless twitter attack on the Tories. However, now Sally and Nadine seem to be buddies, not just on Twitter but in the real world. I too warmed up to Sally Bercow and can see that her tweets are more banter and mean even nasty political point scoring, but nothing more.

Maybe, the posing sensually with only a bed sheet, and the ‘my husband’ is sexy but I am more desirable is a bit much, for some – but why not use it if that’s what she’s good at. After all it did get her on the news, and covered inches of newspaper columns and apparently it was trending all day on twitter, in other words it did what it was intended to do.

At a time where celebrity equals success and is very news worthy, Sally Bercow is thrusting the Bercows firmly in the face of every man and woman in the street. We, political types, sometimes forget that beyond the Westminster village people see and evaluate things differently, that type of celebrity might seem tasteless to the political class but think middle Britain, think Jordan most people can’t get enough of her.
