Walaa's Weekly Wrap-Up ~ August 10, 2013

This week’s weekly warp up can easily be titled Prospective as in ‘put things in perspective’. Since it seems we have less and less of it these days. From leaders to public figures they all charge in gun blazing shoot first and ask questions later.
What Obama did is neither cool nor leader like. Boycotting the G20 because Russia gave Edward Snowden temporary asylum is very childish. The world needs to work with Russia in other much bigger and more serious matters than Russia handing over a computer wannabe righteous traitor.
Sulking and tossing his toys off the pram is not a good look for the leader of the free world and a Noble Peace Prize winner (albeit he won it before facilitating any peace and failed to deliver any since.)

Cyber bullying like all forms of bullying is ugly and wrong. But our reaction to it should not be kneejerk and only after a tragic incident like what happened recently.
It is the responsibility of every parent to know what their child is up to, what they are doing and how they are behaving in school and on the playground with other children. Government can regulate and produce laws to protect its citizens but it cannot and should not parent their children. That’s not the job of government.
As parents and citizens we should be vigilant and engaged but we must also know where to draw the line.

Poor Oprah has very bad luck with expensive handbags. A few years ago she was refused entry to the Hermès shop in Paris. This year she was refused to be shown a £24,500 handbag in a Swiss shop because it is too expensive. First what must Oprah think of Europe? And secondly, I am surprised she was surprised there is racism!
Just ask yourself, what is racism? It is hateful ignorance. Therefore, why should Ms Winfrey be surprised that there are still ignorant people in the world even in Switzerland?

Calls to boycott the Winter Olympics in Russia are ridicules. Although I do not condone how Russia treats its gay community. I respect them for not hiding their beliefs and views on same sex relationships. At least with Russia we know. What about the other countries that have similar views, treats their gay communities same as Russia does but don’t make the main news – yet the west do business and even call some of them allies? Prospective is something we seem to have less and less of lately.
What’s more, to compare what’s happening to Russia’s homosexuals to what Hitler did to the Jews is pure insult to every surviving Jew. Let’s remember, no gay family was exterminated and totally wiped off the face of the earth in a gas chamber but many Jewish families no longer exist because of what Hitler did to them.
Again, please let’s have some prospective.
