You may call me King!

Nick Clegg

The LibDems had their Spring Conference this past weekend but before the London delegates made it home the whole thing was a distant memory. With the McDonald Cameron interview on Sunday night, the strikes and Cash-Gordon on Monday not to mention David Beckham’s injury, the Lib Dems’ conference feels like daylights away today Tuesday.

That is the fate of a third party. Plus, in the case of the LibDems they have yet to master the art of sustainability. Labour “as the governing party” has it easy because when you are in government everything you do or don’t do is news, so they need do very little to be seen or heard.

The Tories on the other hand are a very effective opposition with their eyes constantly and firmly on the ball – to use a basketball analogy – they can steal the ball and slam dunk it from the free throw line (15 feet away from the basket) in a flash.

But what really holds the Liberals back is their utter indecisiveness and the ambiguity by which they handle most issues. It is bad enough that their main heads are on opposite ends of the political spectrum (Nick Clegg is a conservative who is desperately trying to prove otherwise and Vince Cable is a social Democrat who thinks being rich is a moral sin) they for ever seem on a struggle with where to stand on every issue.

However, amongst all their confusion one thing is very clear, Nick Clegg definitely does not want to be the Kingmaker because he wants to become The King.
