Coalition Rocks!

A year ago if anyone mentioned Coalition government or Tories doing a deal with the Liberal Democrats they would have been laughed at. Not only did it sound strange almost bizarre it was an uncomprehendable notion – plus, and if we are honest the two parties did not really trust each other!

Fast-forward a year later and I have to say the Coalition government is not at all that alien and not the one eyed monster everybody feared, but it is sensible politics at its best. For the two parties to willingly put aside some ideological differences and work side by side for the good of the country, they have set a positive precedent that changed the face of UK politics for ever.

So when I heard Nick Boles on the Today Programme talking about the Coalition partners doing a deal (he was not the first person to flirt with this idea) but it sounded natural and, again, it made perfect political sense for the two sides to fight some seats together as coalition candidates – maybe novel in campaigning terms but one many can warm to!

Some Liberals and Tories might feel that this kind of pact will reduce their over all chances of gaining more seats and having their own stand alone working majority, fearing that it could damage relations between associations, grassroots and the party high command. It might be, but the two parties are in the rare position of intimate understanding and it will be mad not to capitalise on that uniqueness for the next election.

With all three parties hovering on the centre ground most elections will more likely than not result in a hung parliament. This pact is a sensible way to guarantee a solid working majority with an ally you already know understand and can trust.
