As things stand!

Yesterday, Lib Dem MP and Chief Political Adviser to Nick Clegg Norman Lamb made very clear his feelings about what he expected from the NHS reforms. In an unprecedented intervention from a government Whip – speaking on the BBC’s The Politics Show – Mr. Lamb shared his concerns for the important principle of the reforms being lost because they were rushed, and the financial risk of doing so too quickly which might cause the service and patient care to suffer. However, what set tongues wagging was his indication to step aside if the changes are not to his liking – because he feels so strongly about his views and might therefore find it impossible to carry-on in his post. Many saw this as an ultimatum to the government and Clegg and at first look it does seem like one!
But, his frank and candid stance can not be anything but admirable, regardless of what we might suspect his true motives are (assuming there is an ulterior motive) this shouldn’t be an issue of concern for Clegg, the Lib Dems or the government as a whole. Party and government Whipping aside – the architects of the NHS reforms are taking a pause, to listen, reflect and improve”. What Lamb is saying – maybe in harsher than needed language – is to be careful, the NHS is the darling of Britain – of course it needs reforming and yes its top heavy and can do with a little trimming. That’s why there is no need for the threatening language – because that’s what the Pause is all about. Taking a second look at how best to deliver and implement the needed reforms.
