The PM was wrong but also right!

“Disgraceful and Racists” are two serious words to either use or imply. The Prime Minster was wrong to hint his old university is either of them and even more wrong to become entangled in the issue of how many black students a university does or does not admit. Oxford and Cambridge are known for their academia and scholastic abilities not diversity, and although being inclusive is admirable however it shouldn’t be devoid or beyond merit.

I’ll understand the concern if Oxford was found to knowingly discriminate against black students but that is not the case here!

Living in the UK for almost twenty years, up to a little over ten years ago, race and social engineering were never an issue. That is until New Labour took prominence. Before that peoples’ background, religion, the colour of their skin, how much money they had or earned or what class they belonged to was just one of those things that described yet did not define a person!!

Nevertheless, if we look at what the PM really said: ‘I saw figures the other day that showed that only one black person went to Oxford last year. I think that is disgraceful, we have got to do better than that.’

…..we have to do better than that’ – here I share the PM’s concern – our schools and academies need to do much, much better than they are currently doing and aim to prepare our future generations to Oxbridge levels by setting their sights on raising the bar and not by expecting good universities to lower their admissions criteria – because, annually bright and talented students of all races and nationalities from all over the world gain admissions with meeting the set entry measures, if they can so can we.

So prejudice based on race, religion or class is a New Labour invention? Come on Waala, are you serious? Have you forgotten about Enoch Powell? Ian Paisley? The Peasants’ Revolt?
When it comes to the issue of education surely it is right to try to discover if any groups are under-achieving, and then attempt to help them. Thinking particularly about the increase in tuition fees and the cut in ESOL (English For Speakers of Other Languages) funding, I am certainly not convinced that the current Government is doing this.
