Why I voted No today!

Dear Every One!

Today is a historic and crucial day in our politics and for our democracy. Britain, a pioneer in parliamentary government and righteousness, to elect its members of parliaments, has for hundreds of years used First Past The Post, a fair and just system that gives everyone an equal chance, “One Person, One Vote”. This served our country well and has been copied by millions the world over.

Some argue it isn’t any more, because it suited our politics before but it’s unsuitable for now. Maybe, but the Alternative Vote (AV) is an unfair and flawed system that assumes every eligible registered voter will turn up on the day and vote. It’s unjust in that it gives the weaker candidates an unfair advantage at the expenses of the stronger ones. AV is a more or less rigged system that favours those who can never win without (to uses a Bowling term) “a handicap” to reach the finishing line.

Voting and how we select our legislator and those who represent us is not a matter to be taken lightly and neither should be the referendum that decides on that. But in this occasion we did! Changing a fundamental part of our policy making without a more serious honest and careful debate is wrong and unwise.

That’s why today I voted No to AV and I urge all of you do the same. By voting No we will ONE, not change into something most of us don’t YET understand and TWO, we’ll allow for a much needed pause thus permitting ourselves the opportunity to revisit this issue in the future, when the debate will hopefully become focused on what’s best for the people not the politicians!

Thank you for your time.

Another good post Walaa.

I will be voting No 2 AV later today.

I agree that AV is far from perfect, despite some claims.

However, neither campaign has done a good job with the arguments that they’ve used.

My response to a recent post on the subject by David Cameron can be found here:
