Kneejerk reaction, empty hype and morality

Posted 27 May 2013 by Walaa Idris

Most people learn from experiences either their own or from others.

But when it comes to politicians, it seems every few weeks a major event causes grown men and women to forget everything they learned and act as if it all happened for the very first time. So much so that it makes you wonder do politicians ever learn?

The savage killing of Drummer Lee Rigby is beyond appalling. However, the kneejerk reaction (Snoopers Charter) of Theresa May is wrong and shows weakness rather than strength. Picking a fight with the DPM over it now show reaction to the Woolwich events. The right action was to oppose and fight Nick Clegg over it on the day he announced its exclusion via his radio show, not after a
terrorist attack.

We need leaders that act not just react.

*******
On the day of the Woolwich event, David Cameron was in the Continent for business, and rightly, he cut that trip short. Held a press conference (in Paris) on route to London and chaired a COBRA meeting on his arrival in London. The whole matter is now in the hands of the securities and the most Cameron can do is sit by and wait from updates, which he can do from any geographical location with a decent distance and transport to Number 10.

Our media needs to get a grip and learn to major of the majors. Cameron taking his family on a perplaned family break to Ibiza is neither a crime nor tactless.

Don’t know about everyone else, but I prefer my PM to be well rested and refreshed with a clear head, rather than stressed and all over the place.

*******
Ganging up on multinationals (Google) for using legal tax loopholes makes our country ‘both politicians and the public’ looks petty. Politicians have the power to make and change the laws and the public have the right to push them to do it. However, neither has the right to dictate how people use these laws as long as they stay within them.

As for the morality of it all, it’s a matter of personal choice and that too cannot be dictated.
