What...!!?

Posted 23 May 2011 by Walaa Idris

On the day Barack Obama went to Ireland, David Cameron re- re- re-lunched the Big Society, U.S Vice President Joe Biden hinted at running for president in 2016, the Icelandic ash cloud makes a comeback. Then we find out Libya is costing the British taxpayer £1 billion and Mayor Boris Johnson is planning to ask the U.S president to pay his embassy’s Congestion Charge bill of £5.5 – the only thing everyone is talking about and seem to be interested in – is some footballer who got caught playing away from home!

What’s wrong with this picture!!?

I agree. There are far more important things in the world than the reputation and love-life of Ryan Giggs.

Even if you broaden the scope of the story to include issues relating to superinjunctions, privacy and parliamentary privelige, there are still more important things.

Unfortunately, modern day society favours soundbites and trashy journalism – things that work for people who have short attention spans and for those who can’t be bothered to do research.

The situation in Libya shows no signs of halting and is continuing to affect the lives of numerous people. However, I question how involved we should be as our military is already stretched and budgets are being cut. Then there’s also the fact that we could be disregarding the sovereignty of another nation, which breaks one of the rules set out in the UN Charter.

I wasn’t aware of the congestion charge issue. However, if the law states that Obama has to pay it, then he should comply.
