Poor Miliband just can’t help himself, can he?

Clegg v Farage EU Debate

For 24 hours many were holding their breath while wondering well he won’t he. When common sense says ‘of course he will’ Nigel Farage is dying to stand before a national audience and debate two of his favourite topics, the European Union and our membership in it.

Clegg knew this when he challenged him to a public debate, just as did every person who reads the papers and listens to political news. There was no way Farage was not going to accept the challenge, because it’s a case of ‘Put You Money Where Your Mouth Is.’

So what’s the big deal then, and who will benefit from this debate?

The big deal as I see it – the two minor parties are fighting for a solid third place while eyeing Yes/No voters of the two main parties. This debate will draw a line under both.

Neither Clegg offering the debate nor Farage accepting surprised me; both leaders lead a 100% Yes/No to EU parties. So it makes perfect sense for them to go head to head and explain to the rest of the UK why is our EU membership good/bad and why should we stay/go.

As for the other two leaders, Cameron and Miliband, despite their own personal reasons on the European question, their party memberships are mixed Yes/No. Both parties, Conservatives and Labour, have pro EU and Eurosceptic MPs and grassroots. That means any debating Miliband and Cameron offer will be very similar to what we hear every day. That is why I see no point either of them joining the Clegg vs Farage LBC EU Debate.

So imagine my surprise when, half an hour after Nigel Farage accepted Nick Clegg’s challenge on LBC, the BBC announces that Ed Miliband might take part in the debate!

There is no logical reason for Ed Miliband to say that, except 1) to goad Cameron to the debate and I say good luck on that one and 2) steal the limelight from Clegg and Farage and have the whole weekend be about him ‘might’ join the debate!

Either way it’s a sad and not so clever move. But I truly think there is a third reason why Miliband announced this. He is running scared from Ukip!

However, if you, the British public, want a referendum don’t let the others fool you, debate or no debate the only party that can give you a Referendum and hear you voice on the EU is the Tory party.

Return a Conservative government in 2015 and you shall get an EU Referendum in 2017. It’s as simple as that.
