Whose strike is it really!!

Posted 6 Sep 2010 by Walaa Idris

The first of two London Underground strikes started at 5pm today and it will be followed by a second walkout at 9pm this evening. The reason for striking is to oppose the axing of 800 jobs including hundreds of ticket office positions, which union members claim is a treat to safety! And even thought Transport for London has promised that all cuts will come from voluntary redundancies, but still, the RMT union is dismissing that claim.

The whole industrial action defies any common sense and as such has little to no support outside the union itself which raises a few questions, what is the motivation behind this industrial action and who is gaining form it!?

It’s simply Bob Crow flexing his muscles to remind the soon-to-be-appointed Labour leadership who’s boss. He fancies himself a bit of a Jimmy Hoffa…

I can not but agree with you on Bob Crow’s motives – for every bodies sake I hope union members can see through him

Hi Walaa

1) The ballot saw an overwhelming majority in favour of strike action

2) Today, TfL admitted that of the 800 jobs under threat, 250 had already gone through compulsory redundancy and posts not being filled

3) This makes LRTs protestations of good faith very hard to believe in

4) Not true that the strike has limited support outside RMT. An LBC phone in show and poll (I think we can safely say that they are hardly sleeper agents for the hard left) this week, showed 74.25% in favour of the strike and only 27.47% for TfL

5) The RMT no longer give money to the Labour Party, they have not done so for nearly a year, if not more. In fact they have disaffilliated from the LP, though of course individuals of RMT are still Labour Party members
