Until men can get pregnant, give birth and breastfeed we are different!

Reading Andy Bloxham’s relationships piece on the Telegraph this morning made me choke on my berries. Read it here and judge for yourself.

Apparently a group of feminist physiologist supposed that chivalry is ‘benevolent sexism’ – and to think I was despairing at the shortage of gentlemen these days and wondering who will teach the younger generations how to become civil blokes!

You know the type that stands up when a lady leaves the table, holds the door and invites her to walk on the inside of the road and might at times even open the car door. Not because he wants to dominate her or because she is weak – or because he thinks it’s the 1950’s or she’s a Stepford wife – but because he is a gentleman with good manners and knows how to behave when the occasion calls for it. But most of all because he respects women and within himself is confident enough to treat them like ladies.

What is wrong with being treated like a lady and why is every gesture of polite kindness by a man is deemed wrong and defeminizing these days – while most acts of emasculating men is considered a right and a triumph for feminism!?

I happen to disagree with many of “The feminist Society for the Psychology of Women” views – mainly because I think they are missing a crucial point in their argument. Men and women are uniquely different with separate abilities and capabilities – and although they are equal in their worth as a living being and therefore should be treated equally when it comes to earning, responsibility and opportunity. They are still too different to be treated as one; however, they can and do complement one another and dare I say also need each other.

So when a man gives a woman flowers it isn’t an insult or belittling but an expression of appreciation. We women are blessed with being verbal creatures and can therefore express every thought and feelings with words – on the other hand, men, the hunter gatherers, mostly express themselves by giving and making stuff.

I also think now the time is perfect for the age of chivalry to be revived, especially as the two sexes are more on an equal footing.
